put one’s foot in one’s mouth

Definition: to say the wrong thing in a certain situation and become very embarrassed

put your foot in your mouth”这个惯用语的意思就是说你在某个场合说错了话,搞的自己或别人很尴尬。这主要是美英的说法,还可以说成“to put one’s foot in it”,是一样的意思. 例如I really put my foot in it/ in my mouth with Julie. I didn’t realize she was a vegetarian. 从这句话来看,“我”肯定时说了诸如“help yourself to some steak, it’s really well cooked”这样的话,弄的场面很尴尬。 Let's all be very careful what we say at the meeting tomorrow. I don't want anyone putting their foot in their mouth.

Example dialog :

A: I am so embarrassed; I had no idea he could hear me in the next room when I was talking about his wife!

B: Ouch! Sounds like you really put your foot in your mouth!
