A shot in the dark

Definition: an attempt to guess something when you have no information or knowledge about it

【世博精解】

a shot in the dark这个惯用语意思是“乱猜，臆想”, 从它的字面意思“黑暗中的一枪"也很容易理解。黑暗中开枪肯定是碰运气，乱射一气，那么它就比喻没有什么根据的乱猜、瞎蒙。比如说在QQ上聊天时，别人问你怎么知道他是男的，你也说不清楚理由，那这时你就可以回答说it was just a shot in the dark. 有时也可以表示没有事实基础的臆断，比如The whole theory is a shot in the dark.

Teacher: That was such a difficult question! How did you get it right?
这个问题真的很难！你是怎么做对的？

Student: I just took a shot in the dark
我只是瞎猜而已。
