吃还是不吃？这是个问题！

美国人生活很富裕，然而这样的生活也有烦恼。吃还是不吃？就是一直困扰他们的问题之一。

Picture this: Two very fat men enter an ice cream shop. They sit down and order two giant sundaes（圣代）. After enjoying their rich desserts（点心）, they go to a health club and have a good workout（训练）. They're trying to work off（发泄） all those calories（卡路里） they ate. Who would be so silly（愚蠢）? Some Americans would.

两个大胖子进入一家冰淇淋店，他们坐下来点了两客大圣代。吃完高热量的甜点后，再去一家健身俱乐部好好地运动一番，想把吃进去的热量消耗掉。谁会这么傻呢？有些美国人就是这么傻。

When it comes to health and fitness, Americans have mixed（混乱的） emotions（感情）. On the one hand, they are concerned about their health. On the other, they have some very unhealthy habits（习惯）.

谈到健康与健美，美国人有矛盾的情结，他们一方面关心自己的健康，另一方面又有一些很不健康的习惯。

1．rich做形容词，通常理解为“富裕的”，此外，它还有许多其他用法。

（1）表示“富于……的”，如：
The country is rich in resources.
这个国家资源丰富。

（2）表示“（食物）营养高、油腻、味道浓的”，如：
I don't like rich food.
我不喜欢油腻的食品。

（3）表示“（声音）圆润、深沉的”，如：
He has a rich bass voice.
他有一副深沉的男低音歌喉。

2．带有work的短语。

（1）work off意思是“发泄”，如：
He has been out of work for a year.
他已经失业一年了。

（2）work out意思是“成功，有好结果”，如：
I hope the new play works out.
我希望新的计划会成功。

（3）work up意思是“激发，使激动”，如：
The politician worked the crowd up until they shouted together.
那政客鼓动群众的情绪,使他们一起喊叫。

当然，表示一件事的两个方面，也可以用这个句型。如：
I often go to English lectures. On the one hand I learn a lot about the English, on the other hand I can improve my listening ability.
我常去听英语讲座。一方面我学到许多英语知识，另一方面可以提高我的听力水平。

练习：
1．一方面，许多人前往美国；另一方面，很多人又从那回来。
2．我喜欢去姑姑家度假。一方面我可以和表兄妹们玩，另一方面，我可以学种花。

练习答案：
1．On the one hand, a lot of people going to the US, but on the other hand, a lot of people coming back from there.
2．I’d like to spend my holiday in my aunt’s house. On the one hand, I can play with my cousins, on the other hand, I learn how to grow flowers there.

*友情提示：有时，为了简化句子，on the one hand可以省略，在句子的后半段直接使用on the other hand，可以理解为“另外”、“从另一个角度看”等。
