Phoebe: Eight dollars and 27 cents. But not really, 'cause I put in the first two, just to, you know, get the ball rolling, and to make myself feel better.

我们知道雪球会越滚越大，但前提是我们必须先做一小雪球，钱也会生钱，前提同样是我们必须先做投资，这也就是为什么菲比会在卖唱时会先把2美元放进自己的帽子里，这样她就能“滚雪球”了，也就是get the ball rolling，这一习语源自体育用语，一旦球开始滚起来，比赛也就开始了，因此它也可以说成set/start/the ball rolling，表示“使某件事开始”，比如说为设立一项救助基金，政府得先拿出一笔钱：

To start the ball rolling, the government was asked to contribute ￥1 million.

另外，我们还可以说to keep the ball rolling, 表示“使某件事继续”，如：

We should try to keep the ball rolling and get as much of our work done while everyone is still here.
