show有“表现出、显示出”的意思，cloven is spelled as c-l-o-v-e-n，意思是“分趾的、偶蹄的”。因此，show the cloven foot字面上看就是“露出分开的脚趾”，这是什么意思呢？故事还得从古代说起。

摩西宣布惟生有偶蹄的动物可食用或做祭品，以后，中世纪创说中的魔鬼往往被描绘成山羊那样，脚是分趾的。魔鬼善于伪装，但不管怎样费尽心机，总是掩饰不住它分开的脚趾，由此产生了show the cloven foot这一习语，意思是“露马脚”或“现原型”。来看两个例子：
