Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth & Up-and-coming2010-04-11 14:24:20 来源:世博英语
对了,这里我就告诉大家一个相对复杂一点的片语:don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Recently, one of my friends presented me a 20G hard disk. It is not as good as a larger one, but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, it’s better than nothing! 片语don’t look a gift horse in the mouth的意思就是我们常说的“不要吹毛求疵”。 The phrase is used to tell someone to be grateful for something that has been given to him or her, instead of asking questions about it or finding something wrong with it. When I was a child, my grandfather once gave me a small toy, I had found it impossible to resist the temptation to say, “It is too small, I don’t like it”. But my father immediately reprimanded me severely: “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, boy!” Landscape painting exerts a peculiar fascination on a great many people, for most of them enjoy collecting famous works, even an up-and-coming young artist creates it. Needless to say, they must have cherished the hope that one day they will be amply rewarded. To be up-and-coming is to be likely to become successful or popular. Many up-and-coming young players have trials for the national team. 第一个片语don’t look a gift horse in the mouth意思是“不要对礼物吹毛求疵,不要挑剔礼物的缺点”。
