Earth, e-a-r-t-h，是“地球”，come down to earth就是叫我们“站回到地球上”。我们又没有登上火箭或宇宙飞船，为什么这么说呢？实际上，come down to earth这个习语的意思是 “结束不现实的生活或幻想”，脚踏实地一点。

许多人在做学生的时候不喜欢安心做功课，常常由于幻想过多而荒废了学业。这句话就是一位父亲劝告儿子时说的：
You'd better come back to earth now and finish your essay.
你最好别再胡思乱想了,先完成你的论文吧。

有时候，想象和现实的差距太大，让人很难一下子接受，感觉好像从天上掉下来，“哐当”一声砸到地面上，也就是come down to earth with a bump，bump b-u-m-p是“撞击”的意思。
一位新上任的经理到下级单位视察，由于没带通行证，保安把他拦在了门外。这与他事先预计的热烈欢迎相去甚远，人们都说
He thought the whole company would sit up and take notice when he came here. He came down to earth with a bump.
他以为整个公司都对他翘首以待，结果他受了一次重大的打击。

一下子从幻想状态come down to earth可能会让许多人接受不了，所以最好是别太脱离现实，be down to earth。（现实一点）

很多人喜欢听民间故事，比如梁山伯与祝英台。原因就在于：

民间故事既现实又充满美妙幻想。

除了表达“现实的”，down to earth还可以形容那些实实在在的没有架子的人。下面是一个大学生在评价他的学校里一位德高望重的李教授，
